Big success at the Long Lunch 2026 - “under the pines."

On a perfect summer’s day in Waitārere, 124 locals gathered under the pines for what turned out to be our biggest and most successful Long Lunch yet. With a complete sell-out of tickets and a waiting list we could easily have filled again, the event truly captured what makes our community so special. From shared tables and great food, to laughter, fun raffles, auctions, and plenty of friendly banter, the day was about more than just fundraising - it was about connection, generosity, and celebrating being part of Waitārere. Providing chairs for everyone made the day even more enjoyable, allowing attendees to relax and fully enjoy the event without having to bring seating along. The relaxed setting and warm weather created the perfect environment for people to reconnect, meet new faces, and simply enjoy being together.

The funds raised from this year’s Long Lunch will go towards upgrading the toddler playground behind our Community Rooms. This project aims to provide modern play areas that encourage outdoor activity and social connection for all toddlers in our community aged five years and under. Resident Nigel Worboys, and his band, Kelburn Viaduct Municipal Ensemble Jug Band, played live music, performing a mix of blues, ragtime, early jazz, and country, adding a relaxed and festive touch to the event. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our business event sponsors and donors for this year’s Long Lunch, whose goods, services, and vouchers contributed to a record fundraising result, surpassing last year’s total by more than 50% - an outstanding achievement and one the whole community can be proud of.

A special mention must go to Gareth Heard from Professionals Real Estate, our major sponsor, who not only supported the event financially but also did a fantastic job as our MC, keeping the day running smoothly, entertaining the crowd, and lifting the energy throughout the afternoon.

Events like the Long Lunch simply don’t happen without the goodwill, time, and generosity of so many people - and once again, Waitārere delivered in style. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year - perhaps even bigger.
